FAQs About Dental Implants

When you’re looking for a Mundelein or Hawthorn Woods dentist, we at the office of Anthony Markiewicz DDS strive to be your choice for all your dental needs. Our goal is to help all our patients keep their teeth for their entire life, though unfortunately, this isn’t always possible. For those situations where a tooth (or teeth) is removed or happens to fall out, one of the best options available is to get dental implants. Because the process of getting a dental implant is likely a new experience to many, we want to do our best to answer any questions you may have in order to alleviate all of your concerns. We’re glad to provide you with the answers to some of the more frequently asked questions regarding our Hawthorn Woods and Mundelein dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are inserted into the jawbone to replace the roots of missing teeth. After the implant has been surgically placed inside the jawbone and it’s had time to properly fuse, a lifelike porcelain crown will be attached to the implant, giving off the appearance of a natural tooth. It’s important to note that in some cases, it will take several months for the implant to fuse. While it fuses, you’ll wear a temporary crown over the dental implant.

How Many Teeth Can Be Replaced with Dental Implants?

Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even all of your teeth. Dental implants can also be used to provide support for removable dentures. You won’t even need a dental implant for each tooth; as few as two implants can support a removable lower denture while as few as four implants are needed to provide a full and permanent set of upper or lower teeth.

Is Dental Surgery Painful?

No, local anesthesia is administered during the surgery, making it so you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort. If you feel any discomfort afterward, we recommend taking over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medication.

Can My Body Reject Dental Implants?

Implants can’t be rejected because they don’t contain any living cells or genetically coded material. The titanium they’re made of is biocompatible and allergies to this are very rare. However, an implant can fail to integrate with the jawbone if an infection develops in the absence of good oral hygiene. Dental implants will ultimately see success rates of over 95 percent.

How Do I Take Care of My Dental Implants?

You take care of them in the exact same way as you do your regular teeth – with proper brushing and flossing. While dental implants will never decay, the gums around them can still become inflamed or infected, making it important that you keep up with good oral hygiene habits. With proper care, dental implants will last a lifetime.

Are Dental Implants Expensive?

While, yes, dental implants are more expensive than other tooth-replacement methods, they also offer the most cost-effective option. Dental implants last much longer than dentures or bridgework and they shouldn’t ever need to be replaced. Dental implants offer excellent value when viewing your comfort, health, and well-being in the long-run.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most people are candidates for dental implants, but in order to be sure, it’s a good idea to schedule a consultation and an oral examination with your dentist.
