Our Mundelein and Hawthorn Woods dentist, Dr. Anthony Markiewicz and his friendly team are proud to offer a wide range of dental services to patients of all ages living in Mundelein, Libertyville, Vernon Hills and the surrounding areas. For our patients with certain orthodontic problems, we proudly provide treatment using the revolutionary Invisalign System. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about Invisalign, along with the answers to give you a better understanding of what Invisalign treatment is all about.

Q: How long does treatment take with Invisalign?

A: Treatment time varies from one patient to the next, depending upon the severity of the orthodontic problem being addressed. But treatment with Invisalign is often shorter than treatment with traditional braces, and can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.

Q: How often must I wear the Invisalign aligners?

A: In order for Invisalign to work as it’s designed, you must wear your aligners for 22 hours each day. You can take them out when eating & drinking and when cleaning your teeth. You may also remove the aligners temporarily for special occasions like school or family photos, as long as you put them right back in when done.

Q: Are there any restrictions regarding what I can eat while being treated with Invisalign?

A: No. Unlike braces, you can eat whatever you like as long as you remove the aligners before eating. Before you place the aligners back in your mouth, it’s important to brush your teeth and the aligners after eating.

Q: Will my speech be affected when I have the aligners in?

A: You may notice that your speech sounds slightly different when you first start wearing the aligners. But don’t worry! Your speech will quickly return to normal once you’re used to talking with the aligners in your mouth.

Q: Can I expect to feel any discomfort when wearing the aligners?

A: You can expect to feel some pressure and minor discomfort for a day or two after each initial insertion. This is a sign that your teeth are moving as they should, into their final position that was carefully planned out by Dr. Markiewicz.

Q: Is it OK to chew gum?

A: We don’t recommend gum chewing when you have the aligners in as the gum will stick to the aligners to make a mess.

Q: Can I smoke when wearing the aligners?

A: We discourage smoking with the aligners in, as the smoke can stain or discolor the aligners.

Q: How do I keep my aligners fresh and clean?

A: Brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small dab of toothpaste when you brush and floss your teeth. Then rinse the aligners off using cool water.

Q: Can kids be treated with Invisalign?

A: Yes, as long as all the adult teeth have come in, including the second molars.
