Healthy Mouth Equals A Healthy You and Healthy Baby

Dr. Markiewicz and his staff understand that sometimes small, but treatable problems in your mouth can become more serious and painful if not taken care of in a timely manner. And plenty of research shows that sometimes these oral health problems can affect your whole body. For example, gingivitis can sometimes lead to periodontitis which is a much more serious type of gum disease. Periodontitis can loosen your teeth and cause them to fall out. When your teeth fall out, you may experience bone loss in your jaw and you may not be able to get adequate nutrition. These studies also show that people who have severe gum disease can have a higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, alzheimer's, arthritis, some cancers and other chronic health conditions. With Dr. Markiewicz and his staff on your team, you stay on a regular schedule of routine maintenance to help prevent these more serious issues.

Oral Health is also very important during pregnancy, both for the Mom and Baby.

A pregnant women's oral health can affect the outcome of her pregnancy. Studies have found associations between periodontal infections and preterm birth, or babies being born early. However, research has not shown that pregnancy outcomes improve with dental treatment.

A mother who has poor oral health has a greater chance of transmitting cavity-causing bacteria to her newborn, even when the newborn doesn't have teeth and Poor oral health can negatively impact birth outcomes.

How To Improve Your Oral Health

Dr. Markiewicz and his staff will work with you regularly to encourage and support you in your quest for a healthier mouth. You can accomplish your oral health goals by:

  • Brushing teeth regularly. Keeping up a regular schedule of daily oral hygiene is one of the best things you can do to improve your oral health. Removing plaque from your teeth will not allow bacteria to thrive which will keep it from eating away at your healthy tooth coverings. Dr. Markiewicz recommends using a fluoride toothpaste to brush at least twice every day and flossing at least once a day to remove plaque from between your teeth.

  • Eating healthy. You might be surprised at the important part eating healthy plays in the health of your mouth. Limiting your sugar intake from sodas, candy and sugary foods help reduce the formation of bacteria in your mouth. Eating fresh, crunchy fruits can help wash away food particles in your mouth and from between your teeth.

  • Make healthy lifestyle choices. It’s true that you have no say in who your parents are and the tendencies that they may pass along to you. But when you are with our Mundelein family dentistry, we encourage you to make healthy choices about how often you exercise, whether you smoke, and how often you visit the dentist.
