Instructions Following Crown & Bridge Treatment
- Your gums and teeth may be very tender after multiple crown preparations.
- Mix one teaspoon of salt in an 8 oz. glass of warm water and swish. Do 2-3 times a day. Take Advil or Tylenol for any discomfort you experience. When brushing, use a soft bristled brush. Gently massage gums and teeth.
- Massage gums with your finger to stimulate tissue. The healthier your gums, the better your temporaries will feel.
- Avoid sticky foods (gum, taffy, caramels, etc.), chewing ice, nuts and hard candy.
- Floss your temporary crowns gently. Drop one end and pull the floss out to the side, so the temporary crown will not be loosened.
- If the temporary crown should come off, place a small amount of Vaseline on the inside of the temporary crown and reseat it. Then call the office as soon as possible so it can be recemented. It is very important that temporary crowns stay in place while waiting for permanent crowns to be placed.
- If the nerves of your teeth were unhealthy before treatment, they may become symptomatic at this time. If the tooth does not settle down after the initial tenderness, please contact us.
- Hot food or beverage can be harmful to anesthetized tissues. Please avoid drinking hot coffee, etc., until the numbness wears off.
- In the event of an after-hour emergency or even the need for simple reassurance about unfamiliar symptoms, please do not hesitate to call.
Instructions Following White (Composite) Fillings
- Please avoid eating or drinking anything hot until the numbness wears off. Also be careful not to bite your lip, cheek or tongue during this time.
- Please stay on a soft diet today and eat away from the treated area if possible.
- There may be some sensitivity to temperatures, especially cold. This could last anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the amount of decay that was present in the tooth.
- Once the numbness is gone, there may be some sensitivity to biting. If you feel that you are biting on the filling too heavily, please call the office to schedule an appointment for an adjustment.
- There may be some sensitivity around the gum or at the injection site. Please mix 1 teaspoon of salt with a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth several times today and tomorrow.
- If the nerves of your teeth were unhealthy before treatment, they may become symptomatic at this time. If the tooth does not settle down after the initial tenderness, please contact us.
- In the event of an after-hour emergency or even the need of simple reassurance about unfamiliar symptoms, please do not hesitate to call.
Care of the Mouth after Local Anesthetic
Your child has had local anesthetic for their dental procedure:
- If the procedure was in the lower jaw... the tongue, teeth, lip and surrounding tissue will be numb or asleep.
- If the procedure was in the upper jaw... the teeth, lip and surrounding tissue will be numb or asleep.
Often, children do not understand the effects of local anesthesia, and may chew, scratch, suck, or play with the numb lip, tongue, or cheek. These actions can cause minor irritations or they can be severe enough to cause swelling and abrasions to the tissue. Please monitor your child closely for approximately two hours following the appointment. It is often wise to keep your child on a liquid or soft diet until the anesthetic has worn off.
Please do not hesitate to call the office if there are any questions.
Care of the Mouth after Extractions
Do not scratch , chew, suck, or rub the lips, tongue, or cheek while they feel numb or asleep. Do not injure his/her lip, tongue, or cheek before the anesthesia wears off.
Do not rinse the mouth for several hours.
Do not spit excessively.
Do not drink a carbonated beverage (Coke, Sprite, etc.) for the remainder of the day.
Do not drink through a straw.
Keep fingers and tongue away from the extraction area.
Bleeding - Some bleeding is to be expected. If unusual or sustained bleeding occurs, place moist cotton gauze firmly over the extraction area and bite down or hold in place for fifteen minutes. This can also be accomplished with a tea bag. Repeat if necessary.
Maintain a soft diet for a day or two, or until the child feels comfortable eating normally again.
Avoid strenuous exercise or physical activity for several hours after the extraction.
Pain - For discomfort use Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin as directed. If a medicine was prescribed, then follow the directions on the bottle.
Please do not hesitate to contact the office if there are any questions.
Oral Discomfort after a Cleaning
A thorough cleaning unavoidably produces some bleeding and swelling and may cause some tenderness or discomfort. This is not due to a "rough cleaning" but, to tender and inflamed gums from insufficient oral hygiene. We recommend the following for 2-3 days after cleaning was performed:
- A warm salt water rinse 2 - 3 times per day (1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water)
- For discomfort use Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin as directed for the age of the child.
Denture
If you have removable partial or complete denture in your mouth then:
- Dentures should be worn at night allowing the tongue cheeks and lips to become accustomed to their presence for the first week.
- After that dentures should be removed during night for tissue health.
- Whenever dentures should be removed after every meal and food debris washed away well and at least once daily the denture should be removed and cleaned with brush and a liquid detergent.
- At night denture should be placed in water.
- Don't use harsh abrasive materials and hard bristles brush also avoid using sodium hypochlorite.
- Very hot water may cause warpage.
- If any difficulties, soreness or ulcers develop remove denture but wear it the day before going to dentist.
Root Canal Therapy - Endodontic Treatment
This procedure will be performed using local anesthesia. There are usually no restrictions after the procedure concerning driving or returning to work. Our Manus dentist will be available for consultation at all times should a problem arise after your treatment.
Continue all medications for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems and any other conditions as recommended by your physician. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.
Please eat a full breakfast or lunch as applicable.
If you have been advised by your physician or dentist to use antibiotic premedication because of Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), heart murmur, hip, knee, cardiac or other prosthesis, or if you have rheumatic heart disease, please make sure you are on the appropriate antibiotic on the day of your appointment. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.
If you can take ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen sodium (Aleve), it does help reduce inflammation when taken preoperatively. We recommend 2 tablets of either medication 2-4 hours before endodontic therapy.
General Instructions:
Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm.
Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist.
You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. NOTE: Alcohol intake is not advised while taking any of these medications.
Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact our office immediately. Our Dr. can be paged 24 hours a day.
After Completion of Endodontic Treatment:
Following your endodontic treatment the root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. A follow-up restoration must be placed to protect your tooth against fracture and decay. Placing this permanent restoration is one of procedures we specialize in at Manus. In most cases your endodontic treatment will be performed by a Manus dentist and therefore a follow up appointment for this permanent restoration will be made at the time of your root canal. If an outside referring dentist was needed we will coordinate all x-rays and appointment arrangements to make this process as pain-free as possible.
