The COVID-19 pandemic has sharpened our focus on our infection control practices. Our office has always been committed to an environment which protects the health and wellbeing of our patients and team members by adhering to an extremely robust infection control program. We value the trust you show in our office and want to reassure you we strive to exceed the guidelines for sterilization and patient protection from the American Dental Association and the CDC. Our philosophy has always been and will always be “to treat our patients as if they were our own family members.”

We provide our patients the highest quality of dental care in the safest environment possible. We will continually update our protocols based on developing guidelines.

In previous blogs, I have described our Patient Protection Protocols. We undertook a complete review of all our systems including ventilation and sterilization systems and screening protocols. Last week I discussed the benefits of Negative Pressure treatment rooms. This week, I will discuss Air filtration and why it is so important.

Ventilation and Air Filtration are components of creating a healthy environment. Clean air is the goal. How do we reduce particulates and chemicals in the air we breathe? Especially the indoor air we are exposed to each day. Some combination of fresh air, exhaust, and air filtration is the ideal strategy to accomplish clean air.

COVID-19 is a respiratory virus, and like all respiratory viruses (common colds, influenza, etc.), is spread through the airThese are particulates (like very small dust particles) and can be removed with filtration or removed through exhausting air outside while replacing with a fresh air intake. At Markiewicz Dental of Mundelein, we chose to do both. For your protection, we installed Negative Pressure to provide exhaust and fresh air, and we installed high level air filtration. Our air filtration systems filter all the air in a treatment room as often at every 75 seconds. For comparison, OSHA recommends an Operating Room filter air every 4 minutes and Dental offices every 10 minutes.

Our filtration systems are medical grade and are significantly more effective than the HEPA filtration systems normally found.

We installed Surgically Clean Air filters in each treatment room. These provide six-level filtration of the air in each room. (BTW-we have three per the video, with two more on the way)

Our chairside extraoral suction system utilizes the Sentry Air Systems combination of ULPA and HEPA filtration.
